NICU Guidelines for Parents & Attendants
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides specialized care for newborn babies who require close monitoring and medical attention. To help maintain a safe and calm environment for babies, please follow all NICU instructions carefully.
These precautions reduce the risk of germs entering the NICU, which can cause new infections, make treatment more difficult and extend a baby’s hospital stay.
Important NICU entry guidelines
Please follow these instructions before entering the NICU.
Before you enter
- Wear the required cap, mask and slippers.
- Follow all 7 steps of handwashingto ensure proper hand hygiene.
- Dry your hands with the paper provided in the tray and dispose of the used paper in the dustbin.
- Wear theblue gown provided in the steel drum.
- Sanitize your hands before holding the baby and after returning the baby.
Not allowed
- Do not enter wearing a cap, muffler, gamchha, scarf, shawl, burqa, coat or full sweater.
- Do not bring bags or personal belongings inside.
- Only the mother may enter the NICU. Fathers and visitors are not permitted.
NICU hygiene & infection prevention
Maintaining proper hygiene is an important part of protecting newborn babies in the NICU. Parents and attendants should carefully follow the handwashing, hand sanitization and protective clothing instructions provided by the hospital.
Before entering the toilet, remove the blue gown and hang it on the designated peg. When leaving the NICU, remove the blue gown and place it in the designated large bin. Slippers should be kept on the slipper stand.

Maintain Silence
Keep the NICU environment quiet and avoid disturbing the babies. All babies require special care and should be allowed to rest peacefully.
Avoid Phone Conversations
Do not talk on the phone inside the NICU, as phone conversations can interfere with the care and monitoring of newborn babies.
Do Not Charge Mobile Phones Inside the NICU
Avoid charging your mobile phone inside the NICU. It may damage your phone and can also affect the equipment and wiring installed in the unit.
Photography & Videography Are Prohibited
Photography and videography of any kind are strictly prohibited inside the NICU.
